Concerning Social Media Challenge

Hello NAMS Families,

I hope that this message finds you well. I wanted to make you aware of another disturbing Tik Tok Challenge intended to disrupt the school learning environment, result in vandalism, and endanger the lives. There is a relatively new challenge called the #ChromebookChallenge. You can learn more about it here. It involves inserting objects into computers in an attempt to set them on fire. This is known as the #Chromebookchallenge or the #Chromebookdurabilitytest across TikTok and Instagram.

Please speak with your child about this and let them know that it is your and our expectation that no one will do such an act with their school issued device or any device and also share the consequences below.

In the event that one of our students participates in such a challenge, the following consequences will be imposed:

Tried the prank (no damages)

  • 1 week loss of Chromebook
  • Contact Home

Tried the prank and damages

  • 1 week loss of Chromebook
  • Contact Home
  • Pay $250

Tried the prank, damages, and smoke/fire

  • Contact NA Fire Department
  • 1 week loss of Chromebook
  • Contact Home
  • Pay $250
  • Suspension Hearing

You may find the district information regarding caring for Chromebooks here. Additionally, the IT department has communicated the following information on their website:

Grades 6-12

  • Each student is provided with a personal Chromebook and charger for educational use.
  • Basic repairs will be provided by IT Support Staff. If it appears that the device has been damaged due to abuse then the building principal will be involved to investigate and determine consequences.
  • If a Chromebook is lost, the student or their parent/guardian will be responsible for a replacement cost of $250. The fee with be assessed in PowerSchool and parent/guardian can pay at the end of the year. If the Chromebook is found and returned prior to the end of the current school year the fee will be removed.
  • If a Chromebook is stolen, the parent/guardian must file a police report within 5 school days of the reported incident and submit a copy to the school office, otherwise it will be considered lost and the student or their parent/guardian will be responsible for a replacement cost of $250.
  • If a charger is not working, bring it in, and a replacement will be provided. Lost or missing chargers will be available for a cost of $25. Families can also purchase their own USB-C chargers on their own if they wish.

Thank you for your support and cooperation!

Respectfully,

Jorge Goncalves
